Photos lose excitement as well as information when printed in black and
white (as they are in Chuck Dodd's Guide to Getting Around in the Black
Rock Desert and High Rock Canyon) instead of colors. But printing them in color would
make the guide too expensive. So I've compromised. The photos are
printed in black and white in the guide, but are provided here, for reference, in
color. Several of the photos in the guide include annotations, with
hands pointing to things and identifying text. I have not included the
annotations in the photos provided here. I've also added a couple of
photos that I believe would expand on the subject nicely.
Actually, there are two sets of photos: the photos printed inside the
guide (in grays) and the color photos printed on the back cover. The
photos on the back cover provide guidance for using color as an
indicator of how wet the playa is and, therefore, guidance for determining when
it is safe to drive on the playa.
