Late Rain is Making things Difficult in 2006

Just as in 2005, late rains and other related weather conditions are making getting around in the Black Rock Desert and High Rock Canyon very difficult -- and even dangerous.

Sheets of water have been moving around on the playa, so conditions can change on a daily basis. At times, in places you can stand with one foot on a firm, dry playa and the other in ankle-deep mud. (Refer to the photo to the right. Note the sheet of water to the left of the truck, which is stuck in the dark brown area.)

A lot of people -- knowledgeable, experienced people -- are getting stuck out there this year. (A lot got stuck last year, too.) Be particularly careful.
